The Reach Resort Key West
ReviewsWe just returned home from a five night stay at the Waldorf Astoria's Reach Resort in Key West. From the staff to the beach everything was fantastic and luxurious. We had a great view of the private beach and ocean. The water is blue green and so different from other resorts with views of a tea colored ocean. I can say this ocean view is the best I've ever seen and doubt it could be beaten by anything in the country. The room itself was very clean of coarse. We enjoyed cocktails at the poolside bar and were very happy with the fact that they were reasonably priced, especially for a resort. So many resorts know they have a captive audience and charge exuberant rates for their bar and food. Not the Reach. We ate at Shula's restaurant, which is there at the hotel on the first night. The steak is out of this world, as is the wait staff. We love to explore local restaurants while on vacation but found ourselves wanting to eat at Shula's every night! There's a deli and a liquor store conveniently located across the street from the hotel. We liked the sandwiches from the deli for lunch, and made our own mini-bar in the hotel with mini bottles of liquors we've never tried. We had tons of fun. we were drinking most of the time so we didn't rent scooters or bikes. Cabs were abundant all over the island and were reasonable for running you back down to the other end of duval. In the end we spent the same amount of money on cabs as we would have spent on renting scooters. This was great for us because we didn't want to deal with scooters or take the risk. You can get a DUI on a bicycle FYI. People were having fun on the scooter though, so I guess it's all in how you look at it. Our stay at the Reach Resort was perfect and if you want a nice hotel on the beach, with a private beach, then stay at the Reach.
We arrived in Key West to a sunny tropical paradise. The Reach Resort in Key West is a rare jem of a luxury resort. This was my wife's 40th birthday gift and we decided to have a big bash in the best party town in the world. The reviews we read here on See A Room about the hotel were complimentary and the fact that my wife loves the beach locked the deal for us. The hotels pool area is off of the private beach and it provides quite an outstanding setting. If you're from a big city like we are, it's an entire world away. We had a first class meal at Shula's restaurant there at the resort itself, which was our favorite meal the entire week. The steaks served there are fresh and Texas quality. I reserved an ocean view suite that also overlooked the pool and beach. Booking directly with the hotel is the only way to go. I got exactly what I requested, and found myself just enjoying the view and starring at it for long periods of time. and boy did we get that! The suite itself was roomy and smelled like new. No musty hotel smell. The carpets were kept clean which is important to us. Our day were filled with lunches at the poolside bar and sunning ourselves on the beach. We went snorkeling and jet skiing a couple of times. Having the food there at the bar was reasonable for a resort, but actually a great deal for Key West. There are many wonderful restaurants surrounding the resort which we enjoyed very much. Breakfast restaurants are abundant in the immediate area and we left for breakfast and then for dinner. On a daily basis we found ourselves walking by the Southernmost Hotel on the Beach which is right off of Duval and a comparable property from rates and quality.
For the most part we didn't stray far from the beach and pool. When we did venture out, the front desk staff was more than happy to provide great recommendations. Shula's ended up being our favorite actually. I could easily spend a week here and never leave the hotel grounds. Not that Key West isn't an awesome place to explore. When we go back, we intend on exploring more. For what we received in quality and service, the rates were not exorbitant whatsoever. There aren't many resorts with these amenities in Key West, and there are plenty of boutique Inn and bed and breakfasts charging similar and higher rates for less. The overall value was fantastic. There are mixed reviews on whether or not to rent bikes, scooters or just walk. I strongly agree with those recommending not renting a car if you fly into Key West. Driving around is going to be more of a hassle than a necessity. One recommendation I have, that I didn't see anywhere I looked was to grab a pass for the Bone Island Shuttle. If you don't want to walk around, this ended up being the least expensive option for transportation everywhere on the island. They have designated stops all over Key West. I only wish I discovered it earlier. I took cabs the first day and they add up really fast. The shuttle only runs until 11pm however, so if you plan on staying out late to party it up at the bars, plan on taking a cab. Key West is an adult playground, however they do an excellent job of accommodating families. There are plenty of museums and tours for kids. We saw many families walking around the island and staying at the Reach. They were the smart ones.
