A friend of ours told
us to stay at the Blue Marlin Inn Key West if we want the best deal on the best
location. We flew into Tampa and drove down the rest of the way. We stopped
along the way in the everglades and took an airboat ride, then stayed a couple
of nights in Key Largo. Finally we arrived in Key West for a four night stay.
The Blue Marlin is a motel and it's average as far as quality. The rates don't
reflect what you get which was my main fear. I have stayed in plenty worse for
more money and for the price it was nice. Rooms were that of what you get with a
nice chain hotel. All the usual comforts with a nice size room that was clean.
The pool is enormous by normal standards and has to be one of the biggest in Key
West. They had a couple of soda/water machines, tables, plenty of chairs and a
covered area of the deck if you wanted to get out of the sun. There was a mix of
an older crowd and families which we liked. Everyone had a smile on their face
and seemed glad to be there. If you're staying for a long time they have an on
site laundromat for guests. Along with the pool and parking lot they offer a few
amenities many of the more expensive hotels don't. The best beach on the island
is called south beach or the southernmost beach (because it's the southernmost
beach in the US). We spent a ton of time relaxing here and enjoying the bar and
restaurant right there on the beach. It's about a three minute walk. Everything
from the southernmost point to Mallory Square at the other end is within a ten
to fifteen minute walk. The sunset is different every day, but there is
something about them here that makes them famous. You just have to see for
yourself but we saw the most beautiful sunsets we had ever seen in our life from
the square. We never needed to use the car the entire vacation in Key West. We
found this page searching for the Blue Marlin phone number, but we called too
late. The only room they had left was a smoking room. They use some kind of
cleaner/perfume odor eliminator they said, and when we got there the room
smelled like flowers not an ashtray, which is what I fully expected. You could
smell a hint of smoke, but for a smoking room it was better than most. If you
want a non-smoking room or any room for that matter, they are sold out almost
every night of the year the guy at the front desk said. I guess that's a good
indication of a good place to stay, just make reservations early. So we went
ahead and booked a smoking king room with a living room and a kitchenette. It
was like our first apartment and had a homey feel to it. We didn't spend a lot
of time in our room, but with a fridge full of beer, a comfy king size bed, and
a TV we easily could have. The Key West Trolley has a stop right around the
corner and we jumped on it our first day. It's a ninety minute tour of Key West
with about ten different stops where you can get off and jump on the next one to
continue the tour around the island. Do this on your first day like we did and
you'll get to see a lot more and know where everything is the rest of your trip.
We had a fun vacation to Florida and time and the Keys are a beautiful place.
Key West was the highlight and the Blue Marlin was a great pick for
accommodations.
If you're looking for a clean, affordable room in Key West to crash after
sightseeing and partying into the night/morning, the Blue Marlin can not be
beat. A short stroll down Duvall street, and you're right in the thick of it.
You can not hear the festivities from the hotel however which is the best of
both worlds. Convenience stores, a liquor store, a beach, great restaurants, and
more surround the property. The pool is right in the middle of the property, and
gets full sun. If you want to get a tan this is it. There aren't any trees
dropping leaves in it either so the water is nice and clear. They also have a
large area with tables and more chairs under an awning if you want to get out of
the sun. The off season rates the best in town and that closes the deal for me.
My husband and I stayed
at the Blue Marlin Motel in Key West for a week in June. Booking directly is
cheaper than with the "discount" sites had for the
cheap key west hotels. For my money, this motel was tops. We
checked-in and received a handy discount coupon book for shopping and
restaurants in Key West! We used almost all of the two for one drink coupons on
our first night out on the town. It saved us quite a bit of money. Half
actually. We only ended spending $40 the entire evening of drinking and dancing,
which included tips. We enjoyed ourselves thoroughly and for a place that's
known for being a bit expensive, we made out great staying at the Blue Marlin.
It's a nice place too. They should call it a hotel. I asked why they didn't and
they said because the rooms have outside entrances instead of from a hallway or
interior. But once you get into the room it's not motel quality. The rooms are
big and well kept.
