Key West Wreck Diving Information
The Florida Keys are a chain of islands off of the tip of Florida. It is astounding just how many vessels like Spanish Galleons and pirate ships found their demise in the shallow waters and reef structure that surrounds these uniquely wondrous islands. What was a horrid end to so many in the days of yore are now favorite past times for locals and tourists alike. Key West Wreck Diving can be one of the most exciting water activities to do in the Keys. Usually the first remnants of a wreck dive off of an extremely old ship would be the ballast stones. Ballast stones kept the wooden ships upright and helped to prevent capsizing. Many wonders can be seen when wreck diving including shmegma covered treasure. My father took me off of Marathon Key once to a site where we encountered massive families of Tarpon as well as a little treasure. He picked up a long oddly shaped, shmegma covered rock and held it up in his hand for me to see. At the ripe old age of ten this did not impress. Until he broke the rock in his hands and out came a silver hand made ships needle. Used to sew the masts. A better treasure from the past I challenge you to try and find.
