Offshore powerboat racing is racing by large, ocean-going powerboats, typically point-to-point racing. Probably the largest, most powerful racing machines of all, the extreme expense of the boats and the fuel required to participate make it an expensive and elite sport. In Europe, Middle East & Asia offshore powerboat racing is led by the UIM regulated Class 1. The international circuit races round the world and is the offshore powerboat racing equivalent Formula 1 car racing. In the USA offshore powerboat racing is split between the SBI / APBA / UIM races and the OSS races. Although there are team sponsors, the sport is still an amateur sport financed by a mixture of private funding and commercial sponsors. There are several regional classes (e.g. the European ProVee & P1 powerboat world championship circuits) and many national classes. Depending on the class, speeds varies from 50mph to 170mph. The sport is moving more to a circuit racing style, which makes for a better TV & spectator experience, though there are still old fashioned endurance offshore racing classes. Coverage of the sport is fairly limited. Results can be found at Startboat, online radio coverage at Talk Offshore, and specialist magazines Extreme Boats, World of Powerboats & the latest worldwide magazine H2O Full Throttle have in depth articles. Only four Super Vee boats turned out in the latest round of the SBI National Series held on the Hudson River in New York City on 10th September and one of those was from OSS. It looks like it's done and dusted for the French duo of Michel Karsenti and Serge Allegre in their Fountain 'Yachts Fountain' as they beat their nearest rival San Diego based Brit Nigel Hook and his American partner Rick Turnel in the Skater 'Lucas Oil'. It was the first time this season the French team have won two consecutive races and with only two races left, the 'Lucas Oil' team have a tough, yet not impossible task to clinch the title. Quite simply Hook has to win the last two races. The OSS team of Joe Sgro and Brett Furshman aboard 'Miccosukee Indian Gaming'After a gruelling 11 race SBI-APBA season, National titles were clinched at the final meeting at Deerfield Beach, Florida on 8th October. Bob Bull and Mitch Miller won the Superboat title in 'CMS Mechanical ' while Jim Anselmo and Bryan Haupt won honours in Supercat aboard 'Pour It On'. After four consecutive wins, Michel Karsenti and Serge Allegre in 'Yachts Fountain' won the Super Vee class while Daren Schwartz and Troy Hannon secured Superboat Stock in 'Miccosukee Indian Gaming'. Bull and Miller have raced in both OSS and SBI this year in their ex. 'Budweiser MTI hull powered by two 750hp Mercurys. They won Sunday's race unopposed when their nearest rival Bill Mazzoni failed to start. The Super Vee and Super Stock classes have been the hardest fought over the season and French duo Karsenti and Allegre in the Factory prepared 'Yachts Fountain' scored another victory over arch rivals, Nigel Hook and Rick Turmel in their privately entered Skater 'Lucas Oil'. British pairing and newcomers on the US scene Chris Witty and Simon Fletcher, driving Captain Hook's Wellcraft Scarab powered by twin Ilmore Viper V10 engines were awarded the SuperVee Unlimited class despite missing a seperation mark on the course. With two victories under their belt, Messrs. Witty and Fletcher have the aroma of world domination in their nostrils as they head off to Mr Carbonell's Key West 'Worlds' before heading back to the UK for a crack at the 2008 Powerboat P1 Evolution title. 29th October 2006 - Although it's too early to say how many teams will line-up in Key West for the SBI-APBA World Champinships, we do know that at least two teams will be from Britain. Key West, Florida, like Cowes UK is regarded by most offshore racers as their favourite race venue but this year, rival US club OSS are staging their World Championships in Destin, Florida on almost the same dates so teams have to decide one or the other. Englishman Nigel Hook, now a resident in the US has long supported Carbonell's SBI organisation and while missing out on the SBI-APBA National title will be hoping his Skater 'Lucas Oil' can reverse the National results by beating French rivals Michel Karsenti and Serge Allegre in their Fountain 'Yachting Magazine'. Hook will have alongside him Briton James Shepherd who was behind the wheel of the Class 1 cat 'King of Shaves' when it flipped over in Plymouth during the 2006 Honda GP. Shepherd has enjoyed considerable success driving 130 and 225hp rigs in the UK Honda series but its a big step up into Super Vee. After Key West, Shepherd heads for Dubai to rejoin Chris Parsonage in the rebuilt 'King of Shaves' for the final two races in the UIM World Class 1 Series. Another English duo are hoping their run of two wins in Super Vee Extreme continues is Chris Witty and Simon Fletcher. Although they have only completed briefly in SVE, they have won both races and, much to team owner Witty's surprise, they were crowned National Champions. Winning the 'Worlds' in their Ilmore powered Wellcraft Scarab would be the icing on the cake. Meanwhile Briain's Steve Curtis will be hoping for success in the Super Cat division of the OSS 'Worlds' aboard 'Reliable Carriers' and is also hot favourite to clinch the UIM World Class 1 title a few days later in Dubai with Bjorn Gjelsten in 'Spirit of Norway'.
