Florida Keys House For Sale

Thank you for your interest in my great custom home. When I purchased this house, I wanted to re-do it with my marine carpenters to make it unbelievable and “One of a Kind”. Following is what I have done:

1) Living Room

We pulled up entire floor, put teak ¾” planks in air conditioning for 2 months at 60 degrees to acclimate the wood so it would not shrink after a couple of years. So you have a solid ¾” teak plank, random length floor with an oil satin finish which is maintenance free. It is beautiful!!!!

2) Kitchen

It has a center Isle with burners on the surface and stools all around for eating. This island has a Kurly Koa Hawaiian hardwood bull-nose finish all around the edges. We shipped in from Hawaii, Kurly Koa Hardwood boards to refinish cabinets after I designed new faces for each cabinet and we then put 15 coats of Captains varnish on each face. They are unbelievable, and until you see this kitchen, you have not seen anything like this before!!!

3) Dock

There was no real dock there before except for the boat ramp. I poured a solid concrete wall and put an L shaped dock in. Also extra large pilings were sunk so you could now put 2 boats there. I also put in 50 AMP electrical service 2X6 treated deck-boards on both sides, held down with stainless steel screws, stainless brackets and teak plugs.

4) Attic

The attic I reinforced with 2X6 and 2X4 treated boards so roof trusses were all tied together for extra strength. Also each end of attic had boards X-ed together for more support. We spent 1 month reinforcing the attic against storms making the roof trusses as strong as possible. Also we reinforced the metal roof. We first put Kool Seal fiberglass strips on all the seams so there are none and the roof is watertight. Next we put stainless screws every 3 inches for extra strength to hold the metal roof on. Lastly we put 4 coats of Kool Seal Top Coat onto the metal roof to protect it. The Model above shows the additional bracing and reinforcements with colors.

5) Fireplace

We added 4 inches of Kurly Koa mantle to the existing coral rock fireplace. We then coated the Koa wood with 15 coats of Captains varnish.

6) Alarm System

I designed the alarm system on both floors with perimeter and door and window sensors. Next we put motion detectors throughout both floors. Then I designed a system that you could control by phone from anywhere in the World. Also it  has a large battery backup system and sensors that tell you when the batteries need to be replaced. I offered the installers $1,000 if they could get into the house undetected, they could not.

7) Master Bedroom

I added custom teak insulated French doors. Next I designed teak shutters for the French doors and windows. Nobody in the world has anything like these and “beautiful” just does not describe them.

8) Upper Deck

I put a second layer of treated wood deck-boards over the existing deck. Each board was fastened with stainless screws and teak plugs. It has an oil finish that is beautiful and extra strong.

9) First Floor Storage

The first floor was completely gutted. We got permission from FEMA to build an elevated room for the washer and dryer. We also cut the side of the carport walls and made them extra strong with spare aluminum 2X4’s for security. You can store boats and vehicles and they are completely enclosed and safe due to the motion detectors. There are also a washer and dryer upstairs.

The tropical landscaping is easy-care and there are sprinklers on timers throughout the property.

When I started all of the above, I had marine carpenters that I had worked with for 20 years. It is truly a “One of a Kind” inside that you would not know from looking at it from the outside.  I wanted it to look like a Key’s home if you looked at it from outside and then be blown away when you see the interior. If you like hardwood and custom work, you will be sorry if you do not buy this house for yourself. It makes a great home, vacation home or corporate retreat and has been maintenance free with no problems for me.

The property is located on the Ocean side of  Tavernier Key on the south side of Tavernier Creek. Access to both Ocean and Florida Bay are immediate. Across the bridge you will find Tavernier Towne which offers great shopping, a 4 screen movie theatre and some restaurants.

Islamorada is also known as the sport fishing capital of the world. Many famous adventurers have made the Florida Keys their home. One of them of course was Ernest Hemingway. The sister ship to Hemingway's fishing boat the "Pilar" can be visited at the "Worldwide Sportsman".
