The grounds of The Merlin Inn are tropical and give you that island feel you can't get from a normal hotel. We couldn't have asked for a better location. You can rent a scooter right around the corner and you won't miss a thing. Parking is easy in the area too. If you decide to walk instead of renting bikes and scooters, then stick to walking. The only time you'll want to move the car is to go up the keys. In that case Bahia Honda is a state park about 35 miles north of Key West and is worth checking out. Some of the rooms are in the back and some are on Simonton street. I read reviews that said the walls were thin and the noise from Simonton was a problem for some. We went ahead with a street side room and chose to risk it. The people complaining about it don't mention that Simonton is not heavy with traffic and there are few room anywhere on the island not facing a street somewhere. Given it's location, the traffic was minimal in my opinion and the noise from the "thin walls" was not disturbing. If you are a very sound sleeper then you may want to request the rooms in the back. Everyone said they were fine. Again I thought the street side room I had was fine too. We were out late and slept in every morning, just in time to catch breakfast. I slept like a baby!

We would sum up our stay at the Merlin Inn in Key West in one word: perfect. We stayed during our honeymoon and loved everything about it. From the tropical grounds to the friendly staff, we couldn't have asked for a better accommodation for our special week. We had spent so much on the wedding we had a tall order to fill. A hotel with a pool, romantic setting, great location, at a low rate. The Merlin Inn more than delivered. We would recommend it to anyone who's looking for the same thing were were, or just a great place to stay in Key West at a great rate! You won't be disappointed. We are planning to back for our one year anniversary and probably many more.
 

The Merlin is old Florida at its best. They are the opposite of the typical affordable corporate hotels you find here in Key West and everywhere else. From the start you don't have to book your room on-line and jump through hoops. The number listed on this site really is the front desk at the Merlin and they treat you with respect and great service from the start. The Merlin's main building is a rooming house from the 30's. It's been nicely updated and kept very well. They even have cottages / bungalows available to the main buildings. Like I said, old Florida. For those old timers like us who remember what it was like. This island is so geared towards preservation of historical sites and landmarks. The Merlin keeps the tradition of personal service and reasonable rates for the time alive. Our standard room had a four poster bed which we loved, and saw ahead of time on the virtual tours. The room was spacious, tropical and romantic. Defiantly a unique combination. The pool is surrounded by lovely tropical plants and gardens. The Merlin Guesthouse is just a block from the main street: Duval. This provided an excellent home base for walking around Key West and stopping into the room to drop off the souvenirs and loot from shopping. We got a great rate, a nice clean room, and treated like a million bucks by the staff. Couldn't ask for more and in my opinion will be had pressed to find it elsewhere. We highly recommend staying here.

We decided to stay at the Merlin Inn based completely on the great reviews we found all over the internet. Then we landed here and got the number to book direct and it ended up being cheaper than the "discount" sites. So we started out with a great rate on our room and in the were very pleased. The location is awesome. It's and easy walking distance to both ends of Duval, and just a block off of it. It's hidden away behind a fence and garden area, so you wouldn't hardly know it there. They have a nice pool that is ok. It's not a huge pool, but very few hotels even have one in Key West and many are smaller than this one. Their rooms are not luxurious in description, but they're clean and well kept with wood flooring. Their style and decor is definitely not the stale boring style you find in most places. The Merlin is romantic getaway and worthy of the great reviews.

The Merlin Inn Guesthouse looks fairly dull from the front. But once you open the front gates and walk onto the grounds, you find yourself in a private tropical oasis. It's really surprising how much opens up when you walk through those gates. We had reserved directly with them and chose the smaller of the two cottages they offered. We went during off season and when we arrived they hadn't sold the larger one yet. I asked if it would be possible to upgrade to the larger cottage and they gladly obliged. What I didn't expect was to get it for free. The girl behind the front desk just shrugged her shoulder and said sure, no problem. It also came with a parking space which was great. It was nice and clean. These aren't top of the line accommodations but for the price they are better than expected. It was also bigger than I had expected. Again deceiving from the outside. The small cottage would have been more than adequate for the two of us. The bed was very comfortable and wasn't worn out. We requested some extra towels and they quickly brought us an extra weeks worth. The service we received from the staff was exceptional and made us feel very welcome. The pool deck was well kept and the pool was enjoyed daily. I didn't find anything in this price range and location that offered a pool at all. With a free continental breakfast and being so close to the beach and Duval st., the Merlin was a fantastic value.
