We all love and adore our little pets. It is nice to be in big city where Veterinarians are a dime a dozen. But for those of us whom live on a small island finding good health care is a little more difficult. Key West Veterinarians are available throughout the keys. If you have an emergency however finding a good hospital that will be open is another story altogether. I have a good story for you, with a happy ending. My husband and I cannot have children of our own. We chose to adopt a little Yorkie. My family has been pure breading them for over thirty years so I choose a descendant of my childhood dogs. When he was four years old and being watched by my father for a couple weeks while we traveled, he started showing symptoms that something was wrong. About a week into dads puppy sitting, he was so lethargic he passed out in his arms. Naturally this happened late at night on a Sunday in Big Pine Key. Daddy called everyone in the phonebook and found a Hospital in Marathon Key that would take him. Upon arriving at the Marathon Veterinary Hospital, a multitude of tests and life saving techniques were preformed. He was diagnosed with a Liver Shunt. Being four at the time he was the oldest living survivor of this kind of genetic disease on the East Coast. The doctors had never preformed the surgery before so almost everyone whom worked for them attended the breakthrough operation. He was in an incubator for thirty days after his inoperative liver was reattached, failed kidneys, testicular cancer, and explorative surgery was completed. It was touch and go even after the extensive healing process. They were on call for us twenty four hours a day, seven days a week, which we used at three in the morning more than once when his abdomen swelled up like a balloon and needed to be drained. To make matters worse we were a young couple just starting out in life together and our little boy was costing us food from our table. The doctors shaved off as much money as they could threw the entire process. It still cost the same mount as a car, but well worth it. He is now healthier than ever and just celebrated his tenth birthday. He still requires special food, but he is off of his extensive drug and vitamin regimen.
