Dry Tortugas National Park Lighthouse

Take a walk on one the worlds best beaches at the Dry Tortugas. The Dry Tortugas National Park is located 70 miles west of Key West. It consists of seven tiny islands and the surrounding waters. Located on one of those islands, Garden Key, is historic Fort Jefferson. Built in the mid-1800’s, with over 16 million bricks, this is America’s largest coastal fort. Originally constructed to protect the important Gulf of Mexico shipping lanes, Fort Jefferson was used as a military prison during the Civil War. During this time, it was “home” to Dr. Samuel Mudd, who was convicted of complicity in the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln.

Dry Tortugas Ferry Reviews

On a recent vacation to Key West Florida, my fiancé and I had the chance to take a trip to Dry Tortugas National park to tour Fort Jefferson. We had been scuba diving the day before and saw that Sunny Days Catamarans also did the trip to the Dry Tortugas, so we signed up. I had been expecting that I would not enjoy the trip, because when I am on vacation I usually like to just lay on the beach. I can honestly say that it was an experience that I'm glad I did. The Dry Tortugas National Park is home to Fort Jefferson, which is a six sided Fort that was used to imprison Army Privates in the late 1800's and early 1900's. I found out while we were there that the building is constructed of some 16 million bricks.

The trip to the national Park could not have been more perfect. It took approximately 2 hours to get there and we got to see a lot of Dolphins, which is my favorite part of any day on the water. The Catamaran that we were on offered a wonderful continental breakfast upon boarding and we were also given a buffet lunch a little later in the day. They even had soft drinks and tea for us throughout the day. When we arrived at the Park, we were given a guided tour and then we were able to spend 41/2 hours doing what we wanted. I enjoyed just looking at the crystal clear waters and seeing the colorful coral reef. I would have liked to go snorkeling and the Sunny Days provided Snorkel Gear onboard, but I was pretty worn out from the scuba trip the day before. We've decided next time we will definitely go snorkeling as the area is supposed to be famous for sunken treasures fro old shipwrecks. I'm not sure if that is true, but I always thought it would be a good experience to see shipwrecks from the past.

I would definitely recommend a Sunny Days Catamaran trip to the Dry Tortugas national Park, it is definitely a once in a lifetime experience.
